The year is 1714. Two years have passed since Ruth Hanover vanished into the wilderness of the New Jersey colony without a trace, leaving behind her husband, William, and their daughter, Sarah. Though William and Sarah have never stopped hoping that Ruth will return, as time goes by it becomes less and less likely they will ever see her again.
Now William is acting strangely. He won’t tell Sarah why he’s conducting business with a mysterious stranger in the middle of the night, he won’t explain the sudden increase in his income, and he won’t share with her what people in town are
saying about her mother’s disappearance.
When the time comes for Sarah to face her father’s secrets and figure out why her mother never came home that December day in 1712, what she learns will shock her tiny community on the New Jersey cape and leave her fighting for her life.
Cape Menace is a new release from bestselling author Amy M. Reade! This historical mystery is steeped in meticulous research and few artistic liberties. The premise is intriguing, Sarah Hanover’s mother disappears without a trace and her father begins acting strangely. This colonial era mystery is laced with intrigue and hints of 18th century romance. Sarah’s mother helped with the sick in the town, but when she disappears, Sarah takes up the mantle. Not quite a healer, not quite a doctor, Sarah is skilled with herbs and other remedies. The narrative follows Sarah as she navigates life without her mother and her increasingly suspicious father.
I picked up quickly that the author had done extensive research into not only the time period, but also the specific setting of Cape May. Sarah is a well-defined and well-crafted character that I thoroughly enjoyed reading! Other characters like William Hanover, Mistress Reeves, Richard, Captain Eli, and other townspeople interact with Sarah and their surroundings in a very realistic way.
The pacing of the book was very good and it has such an exciting conclusion! Clocking in around 250 pages, this novel was easy to read in one or two settings and does not have a dull moment! I haven’t read anything by Amy M. Reade, but I really enjoyed this novel! Her back catalog is extensive and something I am excited to dive into in the future! I would like to extend a sincere thank you to the author for sending me a copy of Cape Menace. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I received a galley copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review!
